I'm kicking off 2023 with a true luxury icon—and one I never expected to own—the Panerai Luminor (PAM00048). In this video I return to a brand I never though. My first Panerai was the 1523 and it is still one of my favorites. I usually wear it on the leather strap and don’t really get it wet. I’ve never been 15m underwater, much less 30m or 100m. I also have a submersible, and still don’t wear that when swimming. The 112 was my first Panerai and I would recommend that one all day. To me, the sandwich dial makes all the difference. Most Panerai fans don't mind winding their watch so I wouldn't spend the extra money on the 8 day movement.
Beautiful piece and I'm not knocking Panerai for dropping the monstrous size of their traditional models, but that 3 bar (~30 metres) water resistance can't go near a pool. For a brand built around the sea, that's always bugged me. Panerai sparked my interest in mechanical watches and I finally bought a 372 last year after many years of only Omegas. How do you find it compares to Rolex quality wise? Reply
While I can't recommend an exact model, for a first Panerai, I would recommend a 44mm, black dialed Luminor, with or without the sub seconds. Something visually similar to a PAM111 or PAM112. There are probably hundreds of different models that have been produced over the years like this.
Have had a Panerai on my bucket list for years and finally found a pre-owned base model in mint condition with box, papers, and full factory service paperwork from 2023. Has the the screw down caseback and 300m water resistance. Lume is oustanding and I love the simplicity of the dial. It looks.awesome.
