Ever since its unveiling at Baselworld back in 2016, I’ve wanted a Rolex Air-King Ref. 116900. And, perhaps rather oddly, I’ve yearned for this polarising watch even longer than that. Allow me to explain. The Rolex Air-King, for most of its very long history, was the simplest, least expensive Rolex, but also in some ways the purist's Rolex. With no date, a 100 m water resistant case, screw-down crown, and chronometer certification, it had every essential attribute that makes a Rolex a Rolex, with no distractions.
The new Rolex Air-King has been introduced as an aviator's watch, and is the first time a multi-color logo has been seen on any Rolex watch. Now here is where things get interesting. The Air-King is back – and seemingly up-market from the point from which it departed some years back. The least expensive of the Rolex models, starting at a price of around ,000 USD, and the smallest in diameter, the Rolex Air King is the perfect watch to purchase when starting a luxury watch collection.
